DECEMBER 2019 STATEMENT

Yet another year now coming to an end! How time flies!.

This month’s theme will be Food, its medicinal value, seasonal recommendations, fertility boasting foods and even an overview of the ketogenic diet.

FOOD

Food provides energy, nutrients, and vitality for the body. Also, for humans and animals to survive, they will require enough food.

Additionally, there are various sources of food, including plant sources and animal sources. To humans, food needs to contain all the necessary nutrients to thrive.

Protein help build the body and promote growth and carbohydrates provide strength. These and others are necessary for an individual to grow healthy and fit.

Also, we need to consider whether food substances undergo industrial modification, have additives, emulsifiers, antioxidants, flavor enhancers, and preservatives to understand what you are feeding your body.

DIFFERENT FOOD AND THEIR SIGNIFICANCE

There are seven major classes of food we shall look at. Each of these classes has several examples of food and how important these foods are to the human body.

1. CARBOHYDRATES

Carbohydrates

This class contains food that provides energy in the form of calories to the body.

Since 65 percent of the energy our bodies needs comes from carbohydrate, it is an essential class of foods.

The brain, kidneys, central nervous system, and muscles also need carbohydrates to function properly.

Foods that can provide carbohydrates include bread, wheat, potatoes, maize, rice, banana, sugar cane, as well as vegetables like nuts.

2. PROTEINS

Protein provides about 10-35 percent of the calories needed by the body.

Protein is important for growth and the improvement of the immune system, especially for children, teenagers, and pregnant women.

Food that contains protein includes meat, chicken, eggs, breast milk, groundnuts, lentils, and cheese.

3. FATS AND OILS

Fats and Oils

They are present in the body as concentrated energy needed by the body, especially young children.

Also, they tend to make food more tasty and satisfying.

Examples of food that provides the body fats and oils include milk products, avocados, butter, cheese, fish, and olive oils.

4. WATER

A glass of water

A study revealed that a 50 kg human contains 31 litres of water, and a one-year-old, 10 kg youngster contains nearly 8 litres of water.

Water is essential for the body to make cells and fluids like breast milk and tears.

Water is also essential to the production of urine and for cooling the body.

It is also essential to only drink alkaline water as disease can not live in an alkaline environment. Make an effort to have an average intake of 2 litres of alkaline water a day.

5. FIBER

This is a combination of different carbohydrates that were not digested like other nutrients but passed through the gut.

Foods that contain fibre includes carrots, cassava, cabbage, peas, and avocados.

Vitamins

6. VITAMINS

They are present in the body in small amounts but are necessary for the body to function properly.

Vitamins are also referred to as protective foods. Vitamins include A, B, C, D, E, and K.

Examples of such foods include Breast milk, egg, vegetables, whole grain cereals, etc.

7. MINERALS

Minerals are needed in the body for the tissues, fluids, and the skeleton to function properly. Such minerals include Iron, calcium, fluorine, zinc, and selenium.

FOOD AS MEDICINE

Several foods help to improve your health when consumed.

Examples of such foods include berries that are known to contain certain plant compounds that are effective against cancer.

Also, there are cruciferous vegetables that contain antioxidants that promote longevity and protect against heart conditions.

Other foods of special medicinal importance are mushrooms, herbs, fatty fish, and spices.

FOOD FOR IMMUNITY

A strong immune system helps in combating diseases and puts the body in a better condition to fight infections.

Examples of these foods include Blueberries that contain a type of flavonoid which helps to boost the immune system.

There’s also turmeric that contains curcumin, which helps to improve the body’s immune response.

Some other examples are oily fish, dark chocolate, broccoli, sweet potatoes, spinach, and ginger.

THE POWER OF COLOSTRUM

When you start to breastfeed your newborn baby, the first food your breast produces is Colostrum.

Colostrum is a sticky, yellow fluid that improves the baby’s immune system, creates a tough coating on the baby’s stomach, helps to prevent Jaundice, and prevents low blood sugar in your baby.

Cow (bovine) colostrum surprisingly is very effective in boasting the adult human immune system.

DIETS FOR MUSCLE GAIN

It is very possible to gain muscles and retain the ones you’ve built with fewer workouts.

Examples of foods that can help you develop strong muscles are lean beef, which contains substances that promote muscle growth, chicken breasts, which helps in muscle repair, cottage cheese contains case in which is needed for muscle maintenance, salmon, and tuna.

It is important to consume 2 grams of protein for every kg if you are actively body building for example if you weigh 75 kilograms, your body needs 150 grams of protein accompanies with supplements to maximise muscle gain.

DIETS FOR WEIGHT LOSS

If you want to lose weight by exercising, some foods can help to increase your weight loss chances.

These foods include leafy greens like spinach, kale, collards, and so on.

Salmon, chicken breast, boiled potatoes, tuna, beans, and legumes are also good examples especially when combined with a ketogenic diet.

THE KETOGENIC DIET

This type of diet limits the concentration of carbohydrates to about 50 grams per day.

Also, they’re effective against diabetes, epilepsy, and weight loss.

Examples of such diets are seafood like salmon, mackerel, sardines, low-carbohydrates vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, and so on.

Others includes meat, avocados, and cheese.

HOW TO KNOW YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO CERTAIN FOODS

On consumption of certain foods, some people tend to allergic reactions that are either mild or even serious.

The most common signs and symptoms that show that you’re allergic to certain foods include itching in the mouth, swelling on the lips, face, tongue, and other parts of the body.

Other symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhoea, wheezing, nasal congestion, and vomiting.

DIFFERENT FOODS FOR DIFFERENT SEASONS

Vegetables like lettuce and broccoli; Meats like pork and beef; are available all year round.

Foods you’ll find in the spring season include strawberry, asparagus, and peas.

Those you’ll find in the summer are cucumbers, bitter lemon, and mango.

Also, in Autumn, you’ll see food like carrots, pumpkin, and chestnuts.

Winter will usher in foods like oysters, spinach, and turnips.

FOOD FOR MALE FERTILITY

Foods that boost and promote fertility and virility in men include oranges, dark chocolates, oysters, salmon, sardines, Brazil nuts, water, ginseng, spinach, broccoli, bananas, garlic, fish and leafy vegetables.

FOOD FOR FEMALE FERTILITY

Food that can help with female fertility include dairy like milk, and cheese.

Also, we have foods like lean animal protein, oysters, yams, berries, complex carbohydrates, fatty fish, beans and lentils.

TO WRAP IT UP

There are many healthy and tasty foods.

Eating a balanced diet includes having on your plate food that contains carbohydrates, protein, fats and oil, vegetables, fruits, and most importantly, an average of 2 litres of alkaline water a day with at least PH 9.5.
