Book review #61 by Tonny Rutakirwa

This review is for the book, ‘Elon Musk: How the Billionaire CEO of SpaceX and Tesla is Shaping our Future‘ for which you can get your personal copy here.

Being African myself, I jumped on the opportunity to read this biography of a fellow African who has made a life for himself in a foreign land. As much of an inspiring story it is, it was also the need to learn how I can succeed if I persisted which pushed me to grab a copy. One of the things I can say after reading this book is that it inspires and once again, fuels the ‘hope plug’.

I guess what I loved most about this book is the fact that most of the things are relatable. In these pages, we get to see a young man run away from his home country, mainly to escape from his abusive father, as well as to get away from a people who are ‘small-minded.’ In the book, we get to read about Elon Musk’s childhood and therefore, understand how that shaped him to be the man that he is (one touching moment is when he was beaten by bullies so bad that he had to be hospitalised).

We also get to read about his first start-ups in the 90s, and how many millions that made him. As you read, you get to see that it was never money that actually drove Musk. Instead, it was his business and engineering beliefs that pushed him to persevere and work hard.

Soon, Musk invested in SpaceX and Tesla. We get to see him during the early stages of these two companies. We watch him as he works for more than 100 hours a week which was quite brutal but he realised that if ever he was going to make it, he had to work so hard.

For a long time, I have looked up to Elon Musk and this book has managed to do justice to his whole story. I really appreciate how we get to hear Musk, himself, speak in this book. We learn that Musk is the sort of Guy who has a clear vision and sets clear goals. However, it doesn’t stop there. We see how, after setting his goals, Musk gives in his all to make sure that those goals are fulfilled.

This book gives credit to Elon Musk and it’s really deserved. You may find this to be more than just a biography; it maybe the motivation that you need to get up and go.

A few times, it seems that people actually laughed at his ideas, especially when he invested in SpaceX. However, this did not deter him. In fact, it actually pushed him to work more on his rocket project and prove the world wrong. Just recently, Musk announced that he is planning to take humans to Mars in 2022. Although some may find it a bit absurd, Musk says that he wants to build a city there. He estimates that his rocket project will carry a crew of 100, as well as the equipment they will need in order to build a colony. If those are not goals, I don’t know what is.

And having read this book, I now understand that he is a person who does what he says he will do so, see you on Mars!
